Google has made a significant announcement that will delight Chromebook users. Starting next year, any Chromebooks released in 2021 and beyond will receive an impressive decade of automatic software updates. In addition to this, Google is also focusing on enhancing the repairability of its cloud-based laptops and adopting more sustainable materials. These moves are aimed at encouraging users to choose Chromebooks for their affordable laptop needs. The decision comes as a response to reports of increasing e-waste, with piles of discarded Chromebooks from schools.
Previously, Google provided software updates for Chrome OS for up to 8 years. The new ten-year commitment is a considerable improvement and is being marketed as “more than any other operating system commits to today.” However, it’s essential to note that Chrome OS, while versatile and capable of running console-grade games, relies heavily on internet connectivity. If a Chromebook cannot run its browser, it cannot function effectively.
Regrettably, Chromebooks released before 2021 will not benefit from this extended ten-year support period. However, users of specific older models, such as the 2017-era Pixelbook, can opt-in for automatic updates. Google has a support forum where users can check if their Chromebook is eligible for this.
For users with older Chromebooks not eligible for extended updates, Google offers reassurance through the Verified Boot feature. This feature checks the system at startup to ensure it has not been tampered with or corrupted by known malware. Google also encourages school IT administrators, responsible for maintaining numerous Chromebooks, to explore the Chromebook Repair Program, which assists in locating parts and repair guides for specific models.
Chromebooks continue to be popular, particularly in the affordable laptop category. However, their sales have slowed down, especially after the pandemic-induced surge in demand for laptops. Whether Google’s commitment to lengthy software update support will keep schools and individuals interested in Chromebooks over the long term remains to be seen. Google seems to be in maintenance mode, attempting to sweeten the deal for potential Chromebook buyers and those who may be having second thoughts, especially as rumors circulate about Apple’s potential entry into the market.
